Product Description

Polypropylene (PP) sheets are essential for modern laboratories due to their exceptional chemical stability, durability, and safety. These characteristics make them ideal for lab environments exposed to corrosive reagents, frequent sterilization, and strict contamination control requirements.

As a thermoplastic polymer with a linear molecular structure, PP sheets offer distinct chemical advantages:

  • Excellent resistance to most common lab reagents including acids (hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid up to 70% concentration, acetic acid) and bases (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide up to 50% concentration) at room temperature
  • Impervious to non-polar solvents (mineral oil, gasoline, toluene) and many polar solvents (ethanol, methanol) at low to moderate temperatures
  • Stable molecular bonds prevent the release of additives or polymer fragments, maintaining sample purity
  • Superior to metal (which rusts) or glass (which can be etched by hydrofluoric acid)
Physical & Chemical Properties
Property Details
Chemical Stability Excellent resistance to most acids, alkalis, and salts
Solvent Resistance Tolerant to common organic solvents; less resistant to strong polar solvents
Hydrolysis Resistance Resistant to hydrolysis in humid or aqueous environments
Food Safety Complies with FDA and EU 10/2011 standards
Melting Point 160°C to 170°C
Temperature Range -20°C to 100°C (short-term exposure to 120°C)
Tensile Strength 20-30 MPa
Electrical Insulation Excellent insulator properties
Key Advantages
  • High thermal stability (-20°C to 120°C) for sterilization needs
  • Lower coefficient of thermal expansion than polyethylene for dimensional stability
  • Biological inertness - non-toxic to cell cultures and microorganisms
  • Non-porous surface prevents microbial growth
  • Resists atmospheric oxidation and UV degradation
  • Maintains properties during autoclaving without warping or breakdown
Applications

PP sheets are versatile for various laboratory applications:

  • Lab workbenches: Protective liners against spilled reagents with easy cleaning
  • Chemical storage: Cabinets, drip trays, and secondary containment bins
  • Fume hoods: Liners and ductwork resistant to corrosive fumes
  • Life science equipment: Cell culture tray lids, homogenizer chambers, microplate racks
